05/03 Enormous Room, Cambridge

Octophonic was a multichannel audiovisual installation and performance at the freshly opened Enormous Room. The sound rig was constructed of eight sets of exposed speaker units that we collected from thrift stores and used appliance shops. The speakers units were distributed evenly throughout the venue and hung from the ceiling by black cables, giving them a sculptural presence in the space.

We designed a custom software interface that allowed us to independently move each layer of the sound composition around the space, recording and looping its trajectory as drawn out by the hand of the performer.

Visuals were delivered by two projectors mounted at right angles. Custom screens were constructed from gossamer and dowel rods and placed at varying distances from the brick walls. Because the light illuminated the suspended fabric as well as the wall behind it, this configuration created three effective display surfaces.
